Fjord Counseling FAQ: Federal Policy Changes & Mental Health Care

1. How do recent federal policy changes impact my mental health care at Fjord Counseling? Fjord Counseling remains committed to providing accessible, trauma-informed, and affirming mental health care to all members of our community. Our clinic prioritizes client-centered support and will continue to advocate for your rights to healthcare and privacy.

2. Will my Medicaid or insurance coverage for mental health services be affected? Some federal policies have introduced uncertainties in Medicaid funding, which could impact reimbursement and coverage for services. However, Oregon is actively working to ensure continued access to healthcare and Fjord Counseling leadership is actively involved in supporting those discussions and contributing to awareness of and advocacy around these important issues. If you are concerned about your coverage, we encourage you to reach out to our administrative team for guidance and support or to contact your CCO directly:

  • Trillium Community Health Plan Member Services: 1-877-600-5472

3. How do changes in gender-affirming care policies affect my treatment at Fjord Counseling? Recent executive orders have attempted to restrict access to gender-affirming care, particularly for minors and individuals using federally funded programs. However, Fjord Counseling remains committed to providing affirming care for transgender and nonbinary individuals. We will continue to offer mental health support and connect clients to affirming medical providers. Fjord Counseling always honors affirmed gender identity, chosen names, and pronouns in all interactions and documentation. Additionally, we offer specialized services through Fjord PRIDE to provide gender-affirming and LGBTQ+ centered care.

4. How do federal policies on immigration impact my ability to seek therapy? New executive orders have expanded deportation priorities and immigration enforcement efforts, leading to increased fear and uncertainty for immigrant communities. Fjord Counseling affirms that healthcare is a human right, and we provide services regardless of immigration status. We do not share immigration status with any authorities and do not comply with immigration enforcement efforts within our practice. We also work with legal aid organizations to help clients understand their rights and access protections.

Additionally, Oregon upholds The Sanctuary Promise, which ensures that local public resources, including healthcare facilities, cannot be used to assist federal immigration enforcement. If you need legal support or have concerns about your rights, you can contact:

5. Are my therapy records and personal information safe under new federal policies? Data-sharing mandates in recent policies raise concerns about privacy, especially for transgender individuals and undocumented immigrants. Fjord Counseling adheres strictly to HIPAA and Oregon’s data protection laws to safeguard your personal information. We protect REAL-D (Race, Ethnicity, Language, and Disability) and SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) data and do not share it without explicit client consent. If you have concerns about privacy, we can discuss additional ways to protect your data.

6. How do federal reproductive health policies affect access to mental health care? Restrictions on abortion funding and reproductive healthcare access disproportionately affect low-income and marginalized communities. We recognize that reproductive choices are deeply connected to mental well-being, and we offer a nonjudgmental space to process these concerns. We can also provide resources and referrals for comprehensive reproductive healthcare.

7. What should I do if I feel unsafe or targeted by these policy changes? Feeling unsafe due to policy changes can be overwhelming and distressing. We encourage you to reach out to your therapist at Fjord Counseling for support. Additionally, we can connect you with community organizations that offer legal assistance, crisis intervention, and advocacy.

8. How is Fjord Counseling responding to these policy changes? Fjord Counseling remains dedicated to health equity, trauma-informed care, and client advocacy. We also provide psychoeducation on systemic issues affecting mental health, ensuring our clients are informed and empowered.
